We recently completed two projects, each of which had hidden doors incorporated into the designs. Two different styles, two different hidden door ideas but the emotional response was extraordinarily similar. The delight that comes from the concealment of another space is profound, you can see the sheer joy on the faces of the recipient. The effect is magical.
Secret doors undoubtedly add that element of drama, but they offer so much more, they inject curiosity, excitement, and aesthetics aside, they can also be incredibly practical.
Secret doors transport one’s thoughts to those of a particular movie scene where a secret agent might suddenly vanish into some inner chamber, or of someone receding into a “Speakeasy” or private den.
Creating hidden doors requires a careful balance of ‘The art of illusion’ and some ‘nifty engineering’. The wall hanging of a mirrored panel or artwork on a substrate fixed with concealed hinges is one thing. It is quite another when that object to be moved weighs more than 220kgs and measures over two meters high and a meter wide.
Construction of concealed doors is a lot more involved than simply replacing an existing door so careful planning is key. There are plenty of hidden door ideas at Groth & Sons. It may be a section of bookcase which revolves effortlessly, or a flat panel adorned with a Tromp l’oeil painting. Or perhaps a section of wall panelling designed to blend in with the existing architecture for a seamless look and rotates to reveal a secret passage.
What ever the scenario, Groth & Sons can design, build, and install your next secret door project. But don’t tell anybody, after all, it is a secret!
