The sophistication of the modern world has seen our homes invaded by equipment and technology to make life easier and more enjoyable. Home offices, home entertainment systems, surround sound, movement detectors, temperature sensors and computer-controlled gizmos for this, that and the other are filling our living spaces with electronic gadgetry and all the associated wiring that goes with it. This evolution presents us all with the challenge of maintaining the look and feel of our traditional home in an environment not too far removed from the interior of a Space Shuttle.
How do we combine the functional requirements of technology, whilst maintaining aesthetic qualities?
For those fortunate to have had dealings with Sydney’s Amos Groth, the question is rhetorical. A bespoke cabinetmaker and designer, Amos is one who revels in the challenge of tasteful and discreet storage solutions. To many, a bookcase is a series of shelves for the purpose of storing and presenting books. To Amos cabinet making is integral to the room in which it is located, extending the line and character and instilling a sense of atmosphere. This dedicated and sympathetic approach means his pieces inevitably compliment a room rather than take command. Speaking with Amos, his passion for architecture and design is self-evident. He loves his work, and so do his clients! The combination of architectural and interior design principles result in rooms superior in both function and style.
Born in the North of England, Amos served his apprenticeship working in some of the grandest homes in London. He believes this is where he developed his passion for style, design and real quality.
His work in Australia has been recognized by many including the late Doyen of Sydney decorators, Leslie Walford. Leslie commented “Amos‘s work is at the top of the tree, a most highly creative individual. The precision in Amos’s work is so rewarding and the care he takes to finish the job is a special delight, and really what everyone wants. The consistent element in Amos’s work is one of quality”.
Amos is intent on best meeting his client’s individual requirements through drafting and constructing hand crafted, fitted furniture. Quality is a constant in every project. With his traditional European background, Amos is more akin to designing libraries and select rooms. He is mindful of achieving results that are both timeless and contemporary.
Isn’t it ironic that a designer who has such emphasis on tradition is making his mark by housing technology?
He is a strong believer that nothing is impossible. Whilst tradition is important as a foundation, it is the concept outcome which he focuses on. His fascination for design solutions has seen him incorporate illusion into his pieces, adding hidden compartments, concealed doors and using tromp l’oeil.
‘The majority of my clients are in established homes but they may want to rework certain aspects to meet their changing circumstances. They want a quality that‘s evergreen so we create solutions which remain adaptable. I have just completed a child’s bedroom that will see them through adolescence. Apart from the obvious considerations of space and lighting, it’s important to plan a room in totality to allow for future adaptation.
